| Breed Specific Legislation
(BSL) are laws against the ownership of specific breeds, mostly targeting
the group of dogs commonly referred to as "Pit Bulls". All dogs of
a specified breed are considered dangerous/illegal regardless of temperament,
training, and disposition of the individual dog. Often, even dogs
that have "characteristics" of the specified breeds are included in these
laws as well, so even if your dog is not one of the breeds listed it may
still be in danger of confiscation and euthanasia simply based on the dog's
appearance. |
Proposed BSL for Minnesota
State Representative John
Lesch (DFL) announced that he will be proposing a state wide ban of 5 breeds
of dogs across the entire state of Minnesota. (No I am not kidding)
The 5 breeds are Akitas, Chow Chows, Pit Bulls, Rottweilers and Wolf Hybrids.
Anybody caught owning one of these dogs will be faced with as many as 90
days in jail and fines of of up to $1,000.
Unfortunately, this type
of law is sweeping many parts of the country. The sad fact is that
it does not work and wasting tax money and killing innocent dogs is about
the only thing it accomplishes. If you research where these laws
have been enacted, dog bites do NOT decrease, and often the number of dogs
of the specified breed actually increase. The ban creates a desire
for the breed among the people that we don't want owning them and are causing
the problem in the first place. Even if you don't like the specific
breeds in a ban, the fact of the matter remains that these laws do absolutely
nothing. These laws are based simply on appearance of a creature.
When has stereotyping and prejudice ever been a good thing? When
will we learn that this type of thinking is not the way to solve these
situations. I've heard the argument that killing all of these dogs
would be worth it if it meant it saved the life of one person. I
know for a fact however, that there have been numerous Pit Bulls that have
actually saved the life of a child or adult, so if BSL had been passed
in their area, those people would have actually died because their dogs
would not have been able to remain with them. How would you justify
that? People can personally feel how they want to on the subject,
but the facts remain strong. People and children still get bitten
after BSL is passed because it does not address the issue of why the dogs
are biting. Even if these 5 groups of dogs were eradicated from the
state, dogs of other breeds will still bite and then what would happen
to the next 5 breeds that people perceive to be the leading biters because
of irreponsible people and hyped up media? And then the next 5?
If you own a dog and are in favor of this legislature, you better seriously
consider when your dog's breed will be on the chopping block in the future
because of other irresponsible owners. I am fighting for the life
of my dog from the government in the country that his breed used to symbolize
and represent. Please help Wallace and all the other dogs across
this state and the country that are affected by these laws by not remaining
silent. Please speak up for the innocent, well tempered dogs that
have no voice. Help us educate those to pass the proper laws that
will actually make a difference. Laws that make the owners take responsibility
for their dogs' actions instead of blaming the wrong end of the leash.
